What is happening here this week could well be the only offseason gathering for Major League Baseball operations this winter. It may be the last time they are around each other until spring training, and there is no telling whether that will begin on time.
Next month’s Winter Meetings, where deals are sparked and often consummated, are scheduled to begin Dec. 5 — four days after the deadline for a new collective bargaining agreement between the players’ union and owners.
While there is the possibility an extension of the negotiation period avoids a work stoppage, the anticipation is owners would lock out players if a new deal is not reached by 8:59 p.m. PST on Dec. 1. That would mean…
